World Environment Day (WED) 2009 is on June 5th. Go here for this annual event's description and more educational information and data.

Club Constitution was revised. Members, at the meeting on June 3rd, voted to consent it as new official Club Constitution of Global Development Project Club (GDP Club). The copies of the Constitution were already sent to the Student Body Association at Shoreline for further approval and processing.

Have you ever thought of running around on a beach with everyone you know before the finals? Dreams come true!! GDP club will hold an international potluck at Richmond Beach on Tuesday, June 9th – prep day which also called “dead day.” The day is open ended until you guys are all exhausted. The group will meet at the Richmond Beach Park (parking lot) at 3pm.

What to bring? You can bring the food that you like the most to share with everyone. You can either cook it yourself and/or make purchases at local markets.

Food Drive for Greenwood Food Bank begins tomorrow. A table will be set up at the PUB lobby between 8:30am – 1:30pm everyday until April 30th. The Global Affairs Center (GAC) on campus will have an evening program concerning Iran. Check out the flyers around the campus. Basically the program has two parts, the first part is the showing of the 50 minute documentary on Iran that Rick Steves (travel host with offices in Edmonds) prepared last year. The second part of the program is a conversation about Iranian society and politics with Abdi Sami, the associate producer of the documentary and who traveled to Iran with Rick Steves.

You would love to arrive earlier for a seat if you know who Rick Steves is. The documentary also aired a month ago in Seattle on public TV (channel 9); you might have seen it.

Dear GDP members,

The dates of FOOD DRIVE FOR NORTHWEST HARVEST is extended through Friday, March 6th!!!!!!!

We are expecting to receive more and more through til the end of the food drive. Academic clubs on campus may introduce this event and raise fund among the members. Besides, GDP Club CAN only take food donation! We also love to deliver 11 boxes of food to serve people indeed, but it can’t happen without our club memebers' kindly support. Volunteer in our team!! & we need 2 volunteers for each period. Thank you in advance for your support.

Information Meeting - Trip to Bali, Indonesia (LAST CALL)

Hi all,

GDP club will hold another and the last information meeting for the study-abroad trip to Bali, Indonesia. The purposes of the trip are basically to visit local non-profit organizations in order to be informed how Microfinance can truly help with the poor to fight against with global poverty. This is an absolute unique chance in your college experience to truly engage and learn about how poverty is affecting billions of people’s lives and for you to make a difference for others but also yourself.

Once again, all related documents are available under "Bali Trip Committee". "MUST-Read Handout" is new and simply written in bullet points; it does cover all main ideas from the rest of the documents. Please spend couple minutes on them to see if there is any question and be ready to discuss the detail on Monday, February 9th, 12:30pm, at Rm. 9201 (the PUB).

Information Meeting - Trip to Bali, Indonesia

Hello fellow GDP Club Member!

It is almost half way through the quarter already, meaning only half more to go! Whew... Hope you are all getting as excited as I am!

If that didn't cheer you up, I know this will. Global Development Project club is going to be proposing an awesome and exciting event for you. The idea of going to Bali , Indonesia to learn about how local nonprofits and developmental organizations are helping the poor to fight against poverty was bought up again because we are currently re-thinking of planning for the trip. Therefore, there is going to be an informational meeting next week. The purpose and goals of the trip along with requirements for the participants will be briefly explained and will then be followed by a Q&A session.

*The costs of airline tickets would be around $1000 if we travel as a group of 10-15 people.

I realize that it is difficult to make such a big decision now to apportion two weeks of your precious summer break. But, this project is an absolute unique chance in your college experience to truly engage and learn about how poverty is affecting billions of people’s lives and for you to make a difference for others but also yourself.

Should there be enough participants, the club will soon start planning fundraising events for the trip. The first important thing you have to ask yourself is whether you are interested in participating in this once in a lifetime chance. Secondly, it is equally as important as to whether you can allocate your time to the planning process. Last but not the least, COME to the session on Monday!

Update: The "Hunger Banquet" and regular weekly meeting

Hi all,

Regarding our meeting last week, GDP club approved the formation of a committee to investigate the planning of presenting a “Hunger Banquet” sometimes in next quarter (I know it is going to be one of our most exciting events yet here at Shoreline :-p). Three basic elements will be discussed amongst those involved in the Hunger Banquet subcommittee: the logistics, publicity and planning of the event. If interested, please attend the meeting tomorrow.

GDP club advisors and officers are so excited to bring a new idea of having a eight-week long series lectures and discussions on the UN-MDGs to our club members - all of you. We will have a good start on this Wednesday (January 14), don't we? The goal#1: Eradication of extreme hunger and extreme poverty will be held for 20 minutes at the begining of the meeting.

Dr. Stephen Bezruchka's Lecture Published Online!

Hello Members of GDP,

I just wanted to notify everybody that I have published Dr. Stephen Bezruchka's lecture online and it is available for viewing. I apologize about the wait but it took a while to get the program published in the correct format and get permission from Dr. Bezruchka.

I have tried to publish the lecture online on video sharing sites Youtube and Google and have found that the graphics and sound quality are relatively poor. In the end, I had to resort to publishing it on Veoh, which is also another video sharing site. Although I realize that it is a hassle to download the program to watch and listen to the lecture, this site does offer the best qualities in regards to the sound and graphics. To view the program itself, a download of the Veoh program is required but once the program and the file are downloaded, you can modify the file into a different video format and uninstall the Veoh program. This will let you watch the presentation without having to go through the Veoh program.

Follow Up on Lecture Series I: Dr. Stephen Bezruchka

To the members and students who made it to the our lecture series event, I sincerely apologize for the limited seating. I know how uncomfortable it was for most of the attendees having to sit on the floor, stand against the wall and even outside the door (I was one of the ones standing outside) * *:
We will make sure to have seating arrangements and the venue more appropriate at our next event in Winter quarter. Also, to those who were at the event, besides the seating arrangement, is there anything that you particularly liked or disliked as an audience member? Any suggestions on a topic or topics that you would like to hear the speaker lecture about at our next event in Winter? Please send us your feedback either through our website, our club or my email address, we would greatly appreciate it.

I am in the process of posting online the sound recordings and pictures from the lecture with a visual presentation containing information about the topic. I have sent a copy to Dr. Bezruchka for his approval and I will be publishing it to the public as soon as I hear back from Dr. Bezruchka.

United Nations Development Goals

Hi everybody,
As you may all know Dr. Bezruchka will discuss global health and poverty this Monday. Pre medical club is going to offer light refreshments. One more reason for you to be there!!!!
Also yesterday we watched the first video on UN MDG goals.
It was about Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. We also had a nice discussion about it afterwards. Next meeting we will discuss the second goal which is achieving universal primary education.
Here is a list of all goals that will be discussed in the club meetings each week:

Hello everybody,

I wanted to inform and apologize to those who came by our meeting today and did not find us there at the usual meeting location. We encountered some difficulty in reserving our usual location. I did, however, post our weekly meeting schedule and the location for the rest of the quarter on our club website. We will be meeting at our usual location Room 9202 Conference B in the PUB until the December 3rd meeting.

We will be holding a video session at the beginning of our next meeting on Wednesday. This inspiring video is about the Grameen Bank which was the first microfinance bank ever built. It will be about 15 minutes long and it will be followed by a short discussion. Be sure to join us for this film presentation at our meeting next week.

The first of our lecture series event is only about 25 days away so if you want to take part in preparing for this exciting event, be sure to come stop by our meeting next week.

Last but not the least, we held club officer elections today and I wanted to congratulate all of our awesome officers for their new positions.

Hello Everybody!
First of all, thanks to those who participated in our club sponsored event featuring the Nobel Prize Winner Joseph Stiglitz (With the exception of Eric being unable to control his laughter and Andy falling asleep 5 minutes into the speech).
Secondly, our congradulations to our partnering organization WPDSS for the great turnout for the Financial Crisis Event. It was a really awesome event with our college professors covering very important issues and providing much needed answers. I was able to attend the event and took some awesome pictures so be sure to check it out.

The Global Costs of the Iraq Conflict: An Evening with Nobel Prize-Winning Economist Joseph Stiglitz

Hello members and students! The World Affairs Council's event series will be presenting Nobel Prize-Winning Economist Joseph Stiglitz on “The Global Costs of the Iraq Conflict,” on October 16. The lecture will be held at Seattle University’s Campion Ballroom where, after his lecture, Dr. Stiglitz will participate in a moderated question and answer session. What have been the true costs of the Iraq war? What will be the long-term impacts of these costs on our economy, on top of the rising price of oil and federal bailouts? How should the next U.S. administration think about its policy priorities, if it considers all the non-budgetary costs of the war? These are just some of the issues that will be discussed and presented by Professor Stiglitz.

If attending this amazing event wasn't enough, the Global Development Project club will be subsidizing half of the ticket price for the first 10 students who will be registering to attend the event through the Global Development Project club! However, the tickets are selling at rapid at pace and the seats available are limited. The discount be will provided on a first-come, first-serve basis so be sure to pre-purchase the tickets as soon as possible.

Registration for the event will begin at 6:15 PM and the program will start at 7:00 PM. As noted above, the event will take place at the Seattle University in the Campion Ballroom 901 12th Avenue Seattle, WA 98122. The price for members and students are $10 and the non-member price is $15.

The campus will be holding a club kick off event on Monday, October 13. The event will start from 1PM to 4PM and it will be held in the PUB Main Dining Room.
Our club was notified by Steven Leonard (Campus Ambassador, Academic Enrichment) and he has informed us that the deadline for requesting a space for the table is by Wednesday, October 8 at 1PM. WPDSS Co-Presidents Michelle and David has offered to share tables with our club and I have promised to reply back by Tuesday so please take a second to vote on whether you approve or oppose sharing a table with WPDSS. The voting will close by Tuesday 6:00AM.

We are currently in the process of organizing our club event for this quarter. Our club advisor Prof Payne and several of our members held a meeting on Monday to discuss and exchange ideas for planning the event. The event's general theme is on global poverty and the specific theme will be voted within the next two meetings.
Several of our members has agreed to research and write a brief introductory paragraph about two possible candidates or organizations or a combination of the two that each of our members are interested in inviting to speak at our event. We will be presenting this information at our next meeting so please come prepared.
